Can You Help?

A Proposal To Reach Out With A "Buddy" System To Those In Fire Affected Areas...

Dear group members and Landcarers from across Maribyrnong catchment:

Since the fires, we have had several enquiries from Landcare and Friends groups from not directly fire affected areas about how they may be able to potentially assist Landcare and Friends groups in fire affected areas. One Landcare group suggested setting up a Landcare “buddy” system, an idea that has much merit.

As a result, we are proposing to set up in the Port Phillip and Westernport region a Landcare and Friends group “buddy” system that (some time in the future) will link Landcare and Friends groups from not directly fire affected areas with Landcare and Friends groups in fire affected areas. The “buddy” system will enable these groups to assist fire affected groups, where there is an expressed need (again some time in the future), with activities such as fencing or revegetation etc.

As an initial step we want to gauge the level of interest among Landcare and Friends groups, from not directly fire affected areas, as to their willingness to participate in a Landcare and Friends group “buddy” system. If your Landcare or Friends group would like to be part of a Landcare and Friends group “buddy” system to support and assist groups in fire affected areas, then please let me know and I will start compiling a list of interested groups.

It is understandable that thinking about Landcare group activity is currently a non-existent priority for many groups in fire affected and threatened areas. However, after some time we will ask the Landcare and Friends groups in the fire affected areas if they would like to be part of Landcare and Friends group “buddy” system with a Landcare or Friend group from a not directly fire affected area. And if they need assistance, then what type of help they need?

Please discuss this suggestion with other members of your group and let me know if your group is interested in being part of the proposed Landcare and Friends group “buddy” system. Thank you.

Kind regards

John
