1080 Pest Animal Baits
A New System, and New Requirements
New System for Purchase and Use of 1080 Pest Animal Bait Products in Victoria
“From 1st January 2008 bait users in Victoria will be able to purchase 1080 bait products from accredited retailers or authorised perishable bait manufacturers.
This replaces the previous system where you could only purchase 1080 bait products one hour per week from 58 Department of Primary Industries (DPI) locations around the State. You were also unable to buy perishable baits like carrots for rabbit control or liver for fox control.
However in order to purchase 1080 pest animal baits under this new system, you are required to complete a 1080 training course and hold the appropriate licence or permit.
These changes are designed to make it easer for you to purchase 1080 bait products. They will reduce your paperwork and enable a greater range of bait types to become available to users. They will also make the manufacture, supply and use of 1080 bait safer” Changes to the 1080 Pest Animal Bait System – What You Need to Know – DPI Brochure
More information for users, retailers and manufacturers of perishable 1080 pest animal bait is available from the DPI website at www.dpi.vic.gov.au/1080 or by calling the 1080 Bait Hotline on 1300 10 1080

Free 1080 Fox and Rabbit Bait Endorsement Training for the New System for Purchase and Use of 1080 Pest Animal Bait Products in Victoria - Update
To follow up on our previous advice (above), further training is required before people can purchase 1080 baits under the new system. People also need an Agricultural Chemical User Permit (ACUP) to be able to purchase the baits.
ACUP courses are offered through TAFE Colleges and sometimes groups organise for courses to be presented locally.
ACUP Training
The Upper Maribyrnong Landcare Group is offering an ACUP course on the weekend of 22-23 September 2007 at Darraweit Guim Hall. The course costs $175.00 for the full course or $120.00 for a refresher (per person). A discount is available for members of the Deep Creek Landcare, Clarkefield Landcare and Upper Maribyrnong Catchment Group (the discount is only available to members of these groups, as the course is part of a funded weed control program in the area). Please contact John Robinson on 5421 9629 by 21st August 2007.
New 1080 Bait Training Requirements – Free Training Available
Training requirement for current users of 1080 pest animal bait products
In order to purchase 1080 pest animal baits under the new system, users are required to complete a 1080 training course, even if you already have an Agricultural Chemical User Permit (ACUP). This is because an ACUP doesn’t train you specifically for the use of 1080 bait, which is a very dangerous poison with no antidote. Improving access to 1080 bait means that it is extremely important that users know how to use it safely. Therefore, to ensure the safety of the community and to minimise possibilities for off-target damage, you must complete this extra qualification which remains valid for 10 years.
To be able to take up the offer for FREE 1080 endorsement training, you must register by 24 August 2007 via the 1080 Bait Hotline on 1300 10 1080.
The sessions are half a day long and held in various locations across Victoria from September to November 2007.
If you don’t do the free 1080 endorsement training prior to 1 January 2008, training will continue to be provided by independent training providers on an as-needs basis and for a fee. A list of these training providers will be made available from the DPI Customer Service Centre after 1 January 2008.
If you don’t have a valid ACUP, you must first complete a Farm Chemical Users Course (FCUC) after which you can apply for your ACUP. Then when you have completed the ACUP, you can go on to do the 1080 training course.
There are different training requirements for retailers of APVMA registered 1080 pest animal bait products, manufacturers and retailers of 1080 perishable bait using aqueous solution, and commercial operators of 1080 pest animal bait products.
More information for users, retailers and manufacturers of perishable 1080 pest animal bait is available from the DPI website at: www.dpi.vic.gov.au/1080 or by calling the 1080 Bait Hotline on 1300 10 1080
