"Raped Environment Led Polluters On, Defense Attorneys Argue" - Joke Or Reality?

(24/2/08 - E)  While intended to be a gag, in 2008 this 1998 spoof has a eerie ring of truth and familiarity to it - haven't we all heard  similarly outrageous and disgusting excuses being used to justify wholesale environmental slaughter... don't the words 'dredging' and 'desal' come to mind?

Here is the opening paragraph of the story on The Onion website.  How utterly sad it is to realise how much life has been breathed into this nonsense in just 10 years.

"OLYMPIA, WA - In their opening statement before jurors Monday, defense attorneys representing Pacific North Construction & Lumber Corp. argued that their client was not at fault for the July 1997 rape of 30,000 acres of virgin forest, claiming that the forest led the development company on with "an eager and blatant display of its rich, fertile bounty."
