Humane Society International Says Tell Prime Minister Rudd To Save The Reef
(28/11/08 - O) You can send a letter today
Here's the alert received from the Humane Society International:
Scientists warn that increases in sea surface temperatures between 1 and 3°C risk devastation for the Great Barrier Reef, with frequent coral bleaching events and mass mortality of corals.
Australian government officials will decide by the end of the year what global targets they will aim for in international negotiations and to what extent they will commit Australia to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They are presently considering aiming for an international consensus to stabilise mean global temperature rises between 2 and 3°C. Even if these goals are achieved, they are unlikely to save coral reefs.
The Australian community needs to tell the Prime Minister that we want a future that includes a healthy Great Barrier Reef.
TAKE ACTION
If you write just one letter this year, please contact Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today to ask that he commit Australia to working for an international consensus to stabilise global temperature rises at 1°C in the hopes of saving the Great Barrier Reef, along with other irreplaceable ecosystems.
Prime Minister Rudd demonstrated his environmental integrity by signing Australia on to the Kyoto Protocol. Now, please urge him to show his people and the world that Australia is committed to fighting climate change and defending its national treasure.

COPY THIS SAMPLE TEXT TO SEND TO PRIME MINISTER RUDD:
As a citizen who cares about wildlife and the environment, I am writing to ask that you please commit our country to aim to save the Great Barrier Reef by working for an international consensus to stabilise global temperature rises at 1 degree Celsius.
Scientists tell us that increases in sea surface temperatures between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius risk devastation for the Reef, with frequent coral bleaching events and mass mortality of corals.
I understand that you are currently considering aiming for an international consensus to stabilise mean global temperature rises between 2 and 3 degrees Celsius. Even if these targets are achieved, they are unlikely to save coral reefs.
Please give the Great Barrier Reef, one of our most magnificent national treasures, a fighting chance by committing to a more ambitious temperature rise target. You proved your environmental integrity by signing Australia on to the Kyoto Protocol. Now, please stay strong and continue this most important battle on behalf of our people, wildlife and natural resources. Thank you.Signed by:
